May 3, 2010 | Non Working Holiday | No Office and No Classes

Perhaps you are asking if we have Office or Classes on May 1, 2010 in the Philippines. Yeah, we have classes and office on May 1, 2010 (Saturday) because Gloria Arroyo declared the labor day as Non Working Holiday on Monday, May 3, 2010. Below is the detailed news:

It will be a long weekend this week after Malacanang on Wednesday announced that May 3 will be a non-working holiday in the country so as to give Filipinos a chance to observe Labor Day.

Labor Day or May 1 falls on a Saturday this year but in keeping with its holiday economics policy, MalacaƱang has decided to move the observance of the holiday on the nearest working day, which is May 3 or this Monday, Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza said.

Labor officials the other day said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will not make any wage increase announcements on Labor Day because wage boards in seven regions that have filed wage hike petitions were still holding deliberations that may conclude only in two or three weeks' time.

But they said the Palace will hold a “mega, mega” job fair on May 1 that will see the government offering 60,000 to 80,000 local and foreign jobs, the biggest ever in the nine-year-old Arroyo administration.

Why Apple Lower or Drop the Price of iPhone?

Maybe you are wondering why Apple dropped and lowered the price of iPhone previous stocks. Here is the reason, This letter was posted by Steve Jobs originally on their site but i have provided it here for you to be updated regarding this current issue of dropping prices of iPhones:

To all iPhone customers:

I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.

First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.

Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.

Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.

We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

Steve Jobs
Apple CEO

Apple lost the next iPhone Prototype Controversy

Are you looking of how Apple lost their next iPhone Prototype? I just read about this controversy this morning and I’m shocked that before apple gives the details of their next iPhone, Gizmodo was the one to first dissected and shared the features of the apple’s breakthrough. Below are the snapshots of the next iphone prototype:

The Next Iphone

Dissected next Iphone

The next iphone has definitely more features compared to their previous iphone products. Police are now looking for the Gizmodo blogger named Jason Chen who published and dissected the features and snapshots of the next iphone.
I just took it from the site Gizmodo and here, the author of the post revealed some of the features of this next iphone:
What's new
• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What's changed
• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

Youtube TV

According to news, Google is venturing to a Youtube TV. If you may remember, Google is the new owner of Youtube. But today, Google is planning a series of celebratory events for closer to the fifth anniversary of the public launch of YouTube in October 2005.Google bought YouTube in a 1.65-billion-dollar deal about 19 months after the online video-sharing service was founded in February of 2005. The Internet giant has been carefully transforming YouTube into a money-making stage for enjoying works ranging from backyard videos to independent films.

"YouTube has the potential to be a very instrumental part of Google's future Television plan," said Gartner technology analyst Allen Weiner.

"In the meantime they will tweak features to be more user friendly and will carefully follow what happens to Internet in living room." YouTube says more than a billion videos are seen daily on its website, which serves up money-making ads to viewers. An average of 24 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube each minute in an amount of content equal to 150,000 full length films over the course of a week.

If google will venture on Youtube TV, this will be another good feature that will be enjoyed by Youtube fans.

Treasure Isle Cheats and Tricks

Treasure Isle is an adventure game published by Zynga Games on April 1, 2010 for Facebook. Like any web-browser game from Facebook, in Treasure Isle the player’s main task is to level up his character while he tries to increase his income and to purchase items with the with the money they earn. However, in this game players can increase their level by earning enough experience points while they dig for treasures on the exotic islands from the game. To perform the digging actions the player needs energy which can be provided by the fruits available in the game. Each time the player performs an action the energy bar empties making the character incapable to dig for more treasures. Since the income is not such an important aspect in Treasure Isle, the page below will provide different links, tips, tricks and advice which will help players learn how to level up faster and how to get more fruits and energy in Treasure Isle.

Treasure Isle Cheats and Tips
Since in Treasure Isle, energy is the only way to play the game continuously there are secret ways to keep the energy bar filled for more time than other players. The only way to have the energy bar instantly filled to the max is by using Energy Packs or by leveling up. Since Energy Packs can only be received from your friends once per day you have to focus on leveling up faster. Here are some tips you should be aware of when you start playing Treasure Isle:

Keep your eyes on the XP bar and always be informed on how many points you need to reach the next level.

When you need only few points to level up do not use any fruit that will grant your character’s more energy than it needs. For example: If you need 1 more point to level up do not eat a mango which provides 25 energy points to the character. Use a kiwi instead, because if you consume a mango you will lose 20 energy points since you only need 5 energy points to reach the next level and your energy bar will be filled then.

When you reach higher level you will be able to use dynamite to clear larger rocks from your path. The interesting thing is that this action doesn’t requires any energy, therefore if you are out of energy visit another island and start using dynamite on the rocks you find. You will receive 5 XP points on each action, however be advised that dynamite can only be obtained from the store for 250 gold.

If you need 5 points to the next level you should consider opening gates, but for that you need gems. Open as many island gates as you can because this action doesn’t require any energy points. Visit new islands for more gates.

Visit your island’s neighbors as often as you can. Helping them will also grant experience points and while you do that make sure you collect the gems from their Gem Trees and the money from the floating chests. You also have to try to level up faster than anyone else because helping a friend with a lower level than yours grants your character’s 5XP points while helping a better ranked friend will only award 1 XP point.

Each Tiki Statue offers a chest. Digging near it you will find one and you will also get XP points. Consider this before digging anywhere else and you will be able to level faster.

Toyota Recalls Sienna Minivan

Another trouble is facing Toyota, the Toyota Sienna Minivan. The Japanese carmaker, the world’s largest in 2008, is recalling all Sienna Minivan models produced, registered and sold from 1998 to 2010. That is projected to be around 600,000 in the United States and 270,000 in Canada. The recall is due to corrosion that may occur after long term exposure to road salt, which in the worst case may separate the spare tire from the vehicle.

Other models will be tested and inspected by Toyota. This includes the Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado and Rav4.

Manny Pacquiao Versus Shane Mosley is better than Floyd

Veteran fighter Gerry PeƱalosa said a match featuring Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley would be better instead of the blockbuster clash between the pound-for-pound king and Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

“The fight would surely be blazing with the exchange of hard punches from two boxers who have made boxing viewing exciting for everyone,” he said in his April 11 “Fearless” column on PhilBoxing.com.
“He is a very active boxer and a good puncher. He can outbox, outrun and outpunch any legitimate welterweight even in his age of 38 because he’s got a very physique and in a tip top shape,” he noted.

But he refused to give his prediction on Mosley vs Pacquiao: “Should it happen… I wonder who would I pick as winner? Let’s reserve that thought some other time.”

PeƱalosa, meantime, wrote that he thinks Mosley would get the better of Mayweather on May 1 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cafe World Cheats, Tips and Tricks

Facebook Players are now engaged with looking how to speed up cooking at Cafe World by having Cheat techniques and tricks. Cafe World is a Facebook application like Restaurant City, Farmville and other zynga application. Here are the Cheats and tricks you are looking at:

There are actually Cafe World Cheats around the web but only few of them really works.

1. When you’re online, try to cook food that needs short hour(s) to prepare. For example – burgers. If you want to earn more coins, cook foods with long hours to prepare.
2. When you run out of foods, remove the door(s) so no customers will enter your cafe.
3. Visit your neighbors to gain more Cafe World coins. I do it everyday.
4. You can actually use 2 doors of 3 doors. This will allow your customers to come faster.
5. Food that requires long hours has long hours before it spoil or vice versa.
6. Arrange and install many tables and chairs but remember to keep distance with the wall to accommodate 2 to 3 customers.
7. Add more food servers so they can serve each customers immidiately as soon as they arrived in your cafe.

Activate Speed hack for Cafe World :

Always remember that speed hack can decrease cooking time and will increase your Cafe World rating. The higher rating, the more chance to earn as fast as you can. You need a Firefox, Cheat Engine 5.5 and Adobe Flash Player 10.0. Now open your cheat engine and choose Firefox. On the right side of the Cheat Engine, check the Speed hack and enter your desire speed. Remember not to increase your speed above 30 as it will reach the timeout.

Infinite stove and counter hacks:
Again you need a FireFox and download cheat engine 5.5. Go to Customize- Functional- Stoves. Look for line ‘4 of 4 stoves used and scan the “4”. Now start dragging the 1 stove from the cafĆ© down into the shop. Now you can see the line “3 of 4 stoves used” and scan the next “3”. Repeat the steps till you have 1-3 addresses left and then change the value of the. Remaining addresses to “1” and TICK freeze and that’s it, you can now have an infinite stoves. You can do the same procedures in counters too.

Dragon-Sized Lizard found in the Philippines

Another Dragon Sized Lizard was found in the mountains of Sierra Madre Philippines. This lizard weighs up to 10 kilograms, lives up in trees and eats fruits. It is only the third-fruit eating lizard in the world. It sports a color of bright yellow, blue and green. It has been hunted by the local tribes people in the mountains yet it is only now that the scientists was able to recognize it as a unique species. How it eluded scientists for so many years will probably remain a mystery, since it is already rare to discover a new species that is considered big in size. It is classified as a monitor lizard, the same class as that of the well-known Komodo dragon.

With 7, 107 islands, Philippines can be considered as one of the archipelagos where several endangered species can be found.

WORM ATTACK via PDF File

Security researcher Jeremy Conway says he has discovered a way to spread malicious code such as worms and Trojans across PDF documents on a victim’s computer. This attack is just the same with some email attachments but little bit differ in a way that PDF files automatically opens together with its attachments. Hackers have known for some time that PDF readers could be manipulated in this way, but Stevens’ attack showed how one reader — Foxit Reader — could launch the executable without even notifying the user. Foxit has now patched this bug, but the underlying flaw in the PDF standard can’t be fixed without changing the PDF standard itself.

For the users who want to turn off the Adobe Reader or Acrobat feature that allows the attack to work, you can click “Edit > Preferences > Categories > Trust Manager > PDF File Attachments” and then un-check the box that reads “Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments with external applications.” Although we are not new to these kind of attacks via different media, we should always be aware.

Manny Pangilinan Controversial Ateneo Commencement Speech

Below is the Controversial Speech of Manny Pangilinan in Ateneo de Manila University Commencement Exercises in the School of Management & School of Science and Engineering last Friday, March26, 2010.

Magandang Hapon sa inyong lahat.

Rev. Fr. Nebres, distinguished faculty and staff, proud and relieved parents, graduates of 2010 – warmest congratulations. I am pleased to join the fellowship of this sesquicentennial class.

Introduction

It has been more than 40 years since I graduate from what was a small, idyllic university. Wr were an all male institution then, with Maryknoll – now Miriam – providing some distraction. We wore neckties, and no celfones or Jollibee's were around. Since that time, Jesuit charism has produced many changes at the Ateneo, most notably an increasing engagement with the world – pushing the frontiers of depth and universality – to use the words of Fr. Adolfo Nicolas. This is consistent with the university's strategic mission of closing the gaps in poverty and competitiveness.

Honoris causa

More than 500 years ago – in 1478 – the first recorded honorary degree was conferred by Oxford University on Lionel Woodville, who was dean of Exeter University and brother-in-law of King Edward IV. Oxford made him a doctor of Canon Law in a blatant attempt to win the favour of the king.

This is my fourth degree – so far. I hear that Oprah Winfrey – The big “O” – has collected a total of 7 awards. So I have 3 to go!

There's the heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson who got a Doctorate in Humane Letters for his wide range of skills, including biting off the ears of his opponents.

But the indisputable number one awardee must be Sesame Street's Kermit the Frog – who was given an Honorary Doctorate of Amphibious Letters by Long Island University!

Quo Vadis?

44 years ago I sat where you now sit, I also thought what you now think – What is going to happen to me? Where can I find a job? Am I really graduating a virgin? Perhaps the best way to answer the first two questions – only you can answer the third – is to point at those sunrise businesses which can best offer opportunities to you for employment and career:

First, businesses unique to our country's geographic or resource advantages such as tourism and mining.

Second, industries that are by-products of our labor mitigation, leaving us for example with a surplus of doctors, nurses, and care givers. And since our population is comparatively young – complemented by our warm disposition – we are naturally competitive in the medical tourism and retirement businesses.

Third, businesses linked to information and communications technology. The shift to a knowledge based economy is best reflected in the emergence of the country's knowledge process and business process outsourcing (KPO/BPO) markets – two of our fast rising industries. This sector generated 7 billion dollars in revenue in 2009, and is expected to realize 17 billion dollars five years from today.

Fourth, infrastructure and utilities. We simply need to build more roads, ports and harbor, power plants, modern airports, especially a new international airport, an efficient transportation system – trans, light rail, ships – modern hospitals to raise the level of medical care.

Fifth, agriculture. We need to feed our people first. I don't understand and cannot accept, why weer are the world's biggest importer of rice.

Life in the corporation – types of bosses

After suggesting where jobs can be found, let me say that most of you will probably work with a boss or with many bossess. Some of them will be first rate and inspiring, but some will make you wonder how they became managers in the first place. Of these managers, four typical types stand out.

First, is the "despotic manager" – who rules as if by divine right, because he thinks he is always right. He has a short attention span and expects everything to be done his way, right away. From him you get nothing but fear. Sa PLDT, sila yung tinatawag naming Argentinean o di kaya, Russian. Kasi palagi urgent yan or rush yan!

Second, is the "floater manager" – one who rises effortlessly in an organization. He is friends with everyone and doesn't make enemies because he does not make the tough decisions. From him you will learn nothing.

Third, is the "intriguer manager", the corporate rasputin. He operates below the surface and plots against everybody. From him you will get painful ulcers and sleepless nights.

Fourth, is the "narcissist manager", whose self-confidence and charm – sometimes combined with handsome or pretty looks – push him or her up the corporate ladder. From him you would get no encouragement.

How to manage your boss

On your way to the top, how can you deal with a corporate species called the boss?

First, you must learn how to manage not only your peers sideways, but also your boss upwards. Second, find the gem beneath the rough. Remember your boss will not be flawed in all aspects. Short of being the S/O/B – son of the boss – he must have had some strengths to have become a maneger. You can have a boss with a fiery temper, but maybe they work like there's no clock. The trick is to know what makes him tick.

Third, be smart, or better yet, smarter than the boss. Fourth, choose your battles. Not all disagreements with your manager will be good for you or your career. Speak out at the opportune time. The Greeks have a term for this – it is called "kairos" – which is to say the right thing at the right moment. Be sensitive.

The challenges – adopt a cause

When I started my own career, I was just like you looking for a job, any job. In fact, I began as an employee – as executive assistant to the president of Filoil Marketing wit ha salary of 1,000 pesos a month. And despite my Wharton MBA, I had to train as a salesman for 6 months working in many parts of Mindanao. It took persistence and patience and years of waiting until I finally became my own boss. Was I scared? You bet! Transitioning from employee to entrepreneur was like starting all over again. In 1981, I founded First Pacific with 6 people, 50 square meters of office space, and little capital. It was like the first day of school for me, and I couldn't call my mother to hold my hand.

So the struggles I faced to make it to this podium today reflect the struggles of so many other Filipinos born without privilege or pedigree.

I was born poor. My father started his career as a messenger at Philippine National Bank. His father began his – as a public school teacher in Apalit, Pampanga. As a young student, I lived on a 25-centavo daily allowance. Scholarships sustained my education from my elementary days at San Beda College all the way to my MBA at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

I grew up in Little Baguio, San Juan – along Barasoain Street. Our modest house stood right on the boundary of a squatter settlement. From my bedroom window, I could see, smell, and feel the lives of the poor firsthand – mga away ng mag-asawa at ng kanilang mga kabit halos araw-araw, mga taong naliligo sa may kanto, mga batang dumaraming parang kabute kada taon.

So whenever I look back on my years here at the Ateneo – I do have one lasting memory, and that's about the poor, and about helping them – on Saturdays when I would teach catechism at the National Mental Hospital in Mandaluyong, and Sundays amongst squatter families in Sapang Palay.

And my interest in sports has emphatically proven how basketball or boxing or cycling provides an escape from the poverty trap. Look no further than Manny Pacquiao as an example. And there are other equally inspiring success stories.

Joel Calderon was last year's Padyak Pinoy Tour of Champions. He is a tricycle driver in Guimba, Nueva Ecija who had to leave his job to train for this summer bikathon. Joel won, riding an old model bicycle borrowed from his teenage nephew. His proud father trundled his tricycle from Guimba to Baguio, 120 kilometers distant, to witness his son's glorious moment – finishing the 195-kilometer race in 5 hours, 58 minutes, 37 seconds.

Annie Albania is a member of our national women's boxing team. She comes from Poblacion, South Cotabato. And is the youngest of six children. Her father was a palay farmer who tilled the family's ancestral land of 2 hectares to put food in the mouths of his children. Annie's father died six years ago, leaving the task of bread winning to Annie. It was in the sport of boxing that she cast her lot. With determination and diligence, Annie is now the country's best lady boxer. And she will step onto the biggest stage of her life – the London Olympics in 2012 – hopefully with the country's first Olympic gold.

So graduates, for the Joel's and Annie;s of this country – take up a cause. Let your passion give force and moment to that cause. Be brave enough to live life passionately. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your passion.

And if you make your cause the focus of your career, that would be great. But even if you spend a few hours each week, a few days each month, you could still change lives. Even the life of one, single person. Few will have the resources to bend history itself. But each of you can work to change a small corner of this country of ours for the better. It is in the total of your individual acts that will be written the history of this generation.

Conclusion

I'd liek to close now by saying that to be truly successful, you have to stand for something larger than yourself, to use your life in service to someone else's. Beyond your immediate concern about jobs and career, there is the broader imperative of nation building – one of the 3 themes of Ateneo's sesqui.

The notion of nation building was best captured by India's first Prime Minister Nehru when he said, on the eve of Indian independence in August 1947: "The service of India means the service of millions who suffer. It means ending poverty and ignorance and disease and inequality of opportunity." And then referring to Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru added: "The ambition of the greatest man of our generation has been to wipe every tear from every eye. That may be beyond us, but as long as there are tears and suffering, our work will not be over."

Whilst our work in this country is indeed far from over, may everyone on this occasion resolve to wipe every tear – in every eye – of every Filipino.

Finally, let me leave you with the wisdom of my fellow doctorate, Kermit the Frog, in his own commencement address – "You are no longer tadpoles. The time has come for you to drop your tails and leave this swamp. But I'm sure that wherever I go as I travel around the world, I will find each and every one of you working your tails off to save other swamps.

Again, many congratulations. God bless all of you. Good luck and good life.
